Redline RL 18.1
Small of stature but big of heart, the Redline RL 18.1 is designed as the speed-demon cousin to the 16.1. Suitable for riders from four to forty, the RL 18.1 has consistently proven its mettle on and off the competition circuit for some time now.
Built more for speed and less for strength, the 18.1s frame rails are identical with the exception that they are slightly narrower in cross section, saving several pounds but retaining 98% of the 16s resiliency. There are reports of 18s being run over by pickup trucks with no damage at all, which is impressive by anyones standards.
The top tube has been stretched a little, but otherwise this remains a fairly svelte bike. Alex wheels, Oryg detangler, powerful Tektro brakes and Chromoly steer tubes are retained, though higher 30/13 gearing ensures that higher sustained speeds are the order of the day. Those tough Alex wheel ride on new Freaky-X linear tread tires, again designed to increase straight-line speed by a reduced rolling resistance, as well as high speed stability and cornering predictability.
At the end of the day, the 18.1 shows itself to be a versatile player in this ultra-competitive market segment, and well worth the $100 premium it commands over the 16.1 if you re feeling the need for speed.
