GT Zone
It is right to give the GT Zone credit where credit is due, and it is a pretty tough little monster. The Zone will do what you want it to without too many alterations. Some say it is a good beginners bike and that is the general consensus this side. If you need a good quality BMX to get started on you would be wise to get peddling on the GT Zone. It is a great bike to get started on the flats or trail and has a nice geometry, but if you are going to do any heavy duty tricks or dirt riding you would be wise to strengthen the rims, hubs and handlebars.
Specs – The frame is a new 2009 GT street design, Chromoly seat tube and machined head tube with a BB shell. The frame features welded GYRO cable guides. GT freestyle designed forks with 1 – ¼ blades. The handlebars are 2007 GT dirt and street dual radius bend in high tensile steel with a 7” rise and attached GT shroom grips. The cranks are 2007 GT designed Forged 3 piece 170mm 36T steel. Included are a set of front and rear Tektro 907 aluminum U-brakes with Tektro 289A full aluminum levers and clamp.
The rims are 48 hole and made aluminum branded Alex G303, also the hubs are 48 hole front and rear steel bodied with 14mm hi-carbon axles.
Conclusion – The 2009 GT Zone does need strengthening if you are to play hard with the bike, there is no point in telling you otherwise. First off would be the rims and hubs in my opinion. You could just order a custom to your desire. Although if you are new to the sport of BMX then stay with the standard package for a while as it will give you a glimpse into your future riding style and what you need from a BMX.
It will also make for a great learning tool, as you can get advice from to more experienced riders and possibly a bit of help with modification. Hey we are always learning there is no better place to start than with the inexpensive Zone.
