Riding freestyle may seem like an expensive hobby, but Mongoose has found a solution for beginners. The Mongoose “Raid” is a freestyle bike aimed at the entry level rider. With a design specialized for freestyle, the Raid provides many options normally associated with expensive custom bicycles.
Standard features on the Raid include a freestyle frame, front caliper brakes and a rear U-brake. While traditional frames favor lightness, freestyle bikes require strength as riders often hop, stand and balance for extended periods of time. Additional braking options are important as ramps and various jumps may require last minute bails and many flat land tricks involve manually pedaling a single wheel while the opposite wheel is braking.
The Raids specialized features include 20 inch wheels, pegs, and rotor. While casual riders may find the wheels to be short, this is ideal when riding street and flatland as the lowered center of gravity is conducive to tricks and landing jumps. Adding pegs is a common aftermarket modification; the Raid saves the trouble and includes four pegs. A multitude of tricks involve spinning handle bars, in order for brake cabling to not tangle a product called a rotor was invented, this bike includes one standard.
Overall, the Raid is an excellent bike for the beginning freestyle rider with its low price and many specialty features.
